Bastet's Bunnies
The Story of Bastet's Jira

This win for Bastet's Jira is dedicated to all of the bunnies lost in all three of the fires: Cimmaron, Bastet and Mossypossum.  How all three are intertwined into this one rabbit is both sad and bittersweet.

Bastet's Allie was my gift to the Gibbons after their fire at Nationals in 2004.  She was out of Richardon's Alabaster Jr. and Swan's Olivia.  Gail returned Allie to me at Nationals in 2005.  I got one litter out of her and I sold her to the Armstrongs at the Indy Convention in 2005.

After my fire in Nov. 2005, Allie's full sibling Bastet's Amber had to be put down due to respitory issues.  Olivia seemed okay so I went ahead and bred her to Bastet's Wookie.  The stress from her pregnancy caused her to have issues too so immediately after her kits were born, they were dunked in Listerine and fostered.  Olivia was put down.  Those two kits out of that litter were named Bastet's Oliver and Bastet's Olive.

Oliver won BOV Siamese Sable at Nationals in 2006 and went with me to Convention in Ft. Worth TX in 2006, but he blew his coat on the way down.  I put him back in his hole upon our return and didn't realize that I'd put someone else (Prideland's Pace) in his hole while we were gone until I heard 'the' grunt.  Oops.  I had my son checking throughout the day on the expecting Pace, and he discovered that she had her babies at the exact day & time of the Armstrong fire.  Those three babies were named Jira, Jessa and Jabba.

After the Armstrong fire, Becky had asked me to try to find a replacement DM Sable Point Doe for Allie, Jeremy's favorite.  Not a single DM Sable Point Doe was born all winter after multiple breedings so I offered her pick of the does out of the 'oops' Oliver x Pace litter seeing as they were the closest thing I had genetically to Allie and because of the significance of the timing of their birth.  Becky chose Jira.  Around the same time, Dan Young decided to let Olive go and asked me if I wanted her back and I suggested he offer her to Becky instead.  Olive went to live with the Armstrong's at this year's Nationals and Pace now lives with Dan.

I got called over to watch the Holland solid varieties being judged, since Cammie won her class and Jeremy came over to tell me Jira had also just won her class!  Funny that both were Solid Tort Sr. Does!  Jeremy said that he and Becky would understand if I didn't want to let Jira go now.  I asked if it'd be okay if she went home with me until Convention IF she placed any higher than she already had but regardless of the outcome, she was still theirs.  They agreed and Jira went on to win Best in Show ... pleasing us all!

I keep telling myself that all things happen for a reason ... but I keep pinching myself to see if this is real ... or only a dream.   Regardless, my nightmare seems finally 'over' and I do hope this bittersweet end for me can be considered a bittersweet new  beginning for the Armstrongs.  Thank you Becky and Jeremy for letting my baby girl come home with me just like Genova did with you!   I hope to breed her to Bastet's Alabaster V and maybe even back to her daddy Oliver before she heads to Kansas.

Now everyone ... go clean your fans.  Better yet, go buy new ones.

Surprisingly, the Star Wars theme began not because I'm a huge fan or anything, but because a little Chin Buck nibbled on my jeans and I named him Chewbacca.   And yes, he was before Princess Leia.

Here is the origin of a few of the names mentioned on this page:
Jira
Jabba
Jessa
Allie
Oliver
